I have a old evinrude that is currently attached to my 15 ft. Avon Rib. I bought it a few months back and it has never quite run right. At first it cavitated and excellorated like a slug, so I took it back to the shop that the previous owner had taken it to. The knew the boat and the engine and said that the previous owner never wanted to put the money into fixing and maintaining it properly, he only wanted to do the bare minimum. So, they looked at it and said that the compression was good and they couldn't figure out what was holding the engine back but they said it would be cheaper to replace it with a new-used engine than to take the motor apart. He said it would run as it had but that he was under the impression it's condition wouldn't improve. I took it out and it seemed to be a little better so I decided to buy a Parhna prob with 2 different sets of blades so that I could experiment to see if either size made a difference. Well one of them enabled the engine to reach a higher RPM and made the boat both more torky and a couple MPH better top end speed. However, when I tried to open up the engine all the way the RPM and speed would actually go down as it had previously. Last weekend I took it out and it started to smoke a little bit excessively and I go into some kelp so I turned the engine off paddled out of the kelp and started it back up and it was ok but there still seemed to be an intermitent problem. We'll I have since bought a new-used boat and it is currently being set up,so I might eventually sell this boat and but if I could get the engine running right I might wan't to keep it because it is smaller and more portable. Any idea's? Does this sound like a common problem or one that isn't fixable. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.
