1973 Evinrude 65HP No High End Power
Hello! I am new to iboats but have been a boater since `73 when our boat was new. The original motor threw a rod through the side of the block a couple of years ago and I recently purchased a good used motor of the same year and horsepower since the old one was so dependable.
Anyway, I paid a qualified shop to mount the motor and fine-tune the engine and have it ready to go in the water. I didn't want any problems. If it needed replaced, then replace it! I just wanted it right. I was assured it was running fine when I picked it up and paid the bill. However, once I put it in the water, it was hard starting, stalling when shifting into gear, always had to manually choke the engine to restart it, and no top end power. At this point I have gotten about 25 of the 65 horses that I purchased. It idles smooth with no indication of a cylinder missing out. Compression is good in all the cylinders (between 120-130). It's obvious the engine was only tuned at idle in a tub of water and not load tested for full throttle. This really honks me off when I told them "I just want it right and replace anything that needs to be replaced" and to feel free to put it in the lake and fully test it if need be. Any suggestions as to what my problem may be? Or am I just a sucker for buying another one of these old motors?
Controls are all working properly, it has new fuel tanks, line & primer bulb, new filter, throttle linkage is opening to max position but there is no power. I appreciate any help you can offer me! Thanks!
