hello and thanks ahead!!! i have a late 70's mercury 1150 inline 6 thunderbolt ignition my starter is acting up first it clicked only, then it crank strong after i manually turned and pushed on the shaft a couple of times, works but not for long . now, cranks once ( 1.5sec.) then die . any body have any clues? previous owner replaced brushes???? thats what he said
That sounds like a bad winding on the armature. You may be able to find it with an ohmmeter, but the way they are wound, it will only show up if it is an open winding. If the winding is shorted, it will be real difficult to find.
Aftermarket replacements are avail, or you can try to have it rebuilt.
