Hi, I'm pretty new to this site, great information for a new boater. I inherited a 14' aluminum crestliner, a 25 HP Johnson, and this electric motor. I got everything else running, but this electric may be dead.
My FIL used it several years ago, then put it away. When I tried it I got nothing at all. Through this thread, I got the Minn Kota Diagnostic PDF and determined that the lower unit was bad. Upon opening it, I found quite a bit of rust and very bad brushes. The shaft still turned, but clearly it had been leaking water into the housing.
Is there any point in trying to rebuild it? It might work with new seals and brushes, I don't know. Can you buy a whole new lower unit, or is that like buying a new motor?
I used Minn Kota's online "Dealer Finder", it says my nearest dealer is in Istanbul, Turkey - I'm in Colorado. I emailed them, waiting for some help from that end.
No replies, oh well. I found out that this motor was discontinued during the Bush senior administration. The only parts available are the brushes and seals for the lower unit. For about $10 I figured it's worth seeing if I can get it to run.
Thanks, yes I know that. I live in a rural part of Colorado, so often there are no dealers or service centers for various things near where I live. I went to the Minn Kota web site, and used their "Dealer Finder". It shows my nearest dealer in Turkey, and says that Istanbul is only 54 miles from here!
I realize that information is incorrect, I just thought it was funny. They were great on the phone, and emailed me the information on two dealers that are, predictably, 4 and 6 hours away. I am ordering parts direct from Minn Kota, then if I end up buying a new motor, I can get one lots of places, one only 100 miles west of here.
