Default water in lower unit 1975 75 hp evinrude

i have just bought a tri-hull boat with a 1975 75 hp evinrude motor on it and scenes this my first boat i checked every thing except the grease in the lower unit so after i get home with it i check and it has water in it the motor runs great but i need to fix the leak in the lower unit i would like to know if it is something i can do my self your do i need to have e a boat mechanic do it?

It depends on where the leak is and your mechanical expertise whether you can do that job or not.

Drain the lower unit, then install only one drain or oil level plug. Apply 7 to 12 pounds of pressurized air to the remaining open screw hole. The leakage area should reveal itself by sound or sight.

thanks I'll try that i do have good mechanical skills but would need a diagram to get started not break anything.

hi there, i have just been on a mission to fix what may be your problem, If the water isn't getting in through the filler/drain plugs or the gearcase screws then it could be this - i have a johnny 6 hp but no water in oil, all i knew was that the water pump was not working...took pump off and low and behold the alloy housing underneath the water pump was corroded. i was probably close to getting water in my oil if it hadn't been for the gasket under that part. Check it out while your down there.

p.s. diagrams can be seen at epc.brp.com or possibly here at iboats? i haven't checked it out as yet.
