Angry Mercury 1982 40 hp choke problem

The choke on my Mercury won't activate when I depress the key. When I use the manual choke knob the choke closes but I notice a black plastic 2" rod is dangling from the choke.

I removed enough parts to get to the choke and found that the plastic rod broke off of the plunger that's pulled in by the solenoid activated from depressing the start key.

If anyone can direct me to where I can obtain the choke shutter assembly that comes with the plunger, for my 1982 40 hp Merc. Serial # 6140815, I'd be happy because I might forget how to get it back together.

Smile Re: Mercury 1982 40 hp choke problem

Well, even though no one replied to my problem I solved it by calling a Mercury dealer who quoted me $135.00 for a choke solenoid assembly. When I called another one he informed me that the broken plunger was all I needed and sold me one for $14.50. Installed it and now choke works great. It pays to shop around.
