I have a 1985 75 HP Mercury on my pontoon boat. I believe the trim/tilt motor brushes are corroded (been sitting for about 4 years). I can hear both the relays kicking in but the motor doesnt run. The tilt motor is the square type. I am trying to find out how to remove the top plate on the tilt motor. Can I remove the right side engine mounting plate with out hurting anything. I have read the repair manual but it really doesnt address, just getting at the electric motor to check the brushes or armature. The pictures in the manual lead me to believe the brush holder (plate) is just under the top cover plate. I would really appreciate some guidance or advice on this as I really cant afford the $120 per hour charge at the boat repair shop, plus the wait is about 4-6 weeks.

Check any and all fuses . There may be one you are overlooking between battery and motor.

thanks for the reply. I figured out how to remove the motor and found rust between the armature and the field coils. I cleaned it up and I am sure it will work but now I am finding out you cant buy the square O-rings. They want to sell you a $1200 trim/tilt motor
