Hi everyone. I don't know much about boats but I am looking at one to buy. The problem is that it does not seem to shift into forward or reverse. All it does is rev the engine. Any suggestions? We pulled the boat out of the water and pulled the drain bolt for the gear oil, It had a lot of water in it. The bolt was not very tight as well. Any suggestions?

Free would be way to expensive. Probably looking at a minimum of $2000 worth of inexpensive aftermarket parts to fix it. Not counting any labor you have to do.

It all depends on the value of the boat, what's wrong, and what it's going to take to fix it.

You can get a complete SEI outdrive, with labor and a decent once over to set you back 2 thousand or more if they find much else wrong.

It had better be in very nice shape or I'd pass.

Run, that is a pos.

UHHHHH HUHHHHH ............ I second that motion. If you're looking to learn about boats by wrenching on one from the start, then by all means, go for it. However, if you're wanting to go boating from the start, then RUN away from this one.

Thanks guys. I was told to check the Throttle only button.

That won't make it shift, it just makes the control operate the throttle only and not the shift.

Even if the button is stuck on??? I guess you guys know better tho. I think I will stay away from it.

Re: Mercruiser 140 wont shift

yes, if the throttle button is stuck in then yes the boat wont shif and just ref the motor in F or R.

If you cant press the button in then theres a problem. But the water in the drive is bad enough. How long was there water in the drive?

It could be just a loose oil fill screw but then again who knows. when you go to look at a boat to buy it should be in workign order not need fixing from the get go.
