Default 1978 Evinrude 35hp gearcase oil question

What type gearcase oil should be used in this engine. I just rebuilt the lower unti and now need to get the gearcase oil to be ready for the lake. And how much oil does it take?

It takes 10 ozs.

The recommended oil is 80-90 outboard gear oil, it has additives to protect the lower if you have water intrusion. Always replace the washer on the vent and drain screw, as they are a one time use and their failure is the #1 cause of water intrusion.

Thanks, I will get some outboard gear oil before I start it up and tune the engine.

In order to go ahead and test for any leaks I put some automatic transmission fluid in the gearcase because it all I had for now. I will be going tomorrow and getting the correct oil for the gearcase and will flush the gearcase really well to get all the transmission fluid out.

Anyway, after filling it with the trans fluid I think it may be leaking around the large O-ring around the bottom side. Will this stop with the correct oil or is something wrong?

Please disregard the issue with the leak. I put some pressure on the gearcase and fluid started pouring out the back of the unit. I just filled the unit with black RTV sealant and all is fine now..

Just kidding, I took the carrier back out and somehow I messed up the O-ring when I assembled the unit. Replaced the O-ring and reassembled, added fluid, pressure tested to 18lbs and everything is great. Will be heading tomorrow to get the correct oil for the unit and hopefully to the lake this weekend.

Thanks for the help

Robert
