First I want to say, This is why I absolutely love technology and the unlimited communication it offers. With that being said, I need some help.

I am ready to sell my 1991 Stratos Bass Boat. On the back is a 48 horse Evinrude. Got a guy ready to buy, but we noticed something today while looking the boat over. A LEAK!

Transom side of the motor (Front). Where the lower unit meets the rest of the motor. There is a small hole. The hole is actually on the upper part of the motor, but meets up with the lower unit. (The lower unit completes the bottom side of this tiny hole)

Problem, it appears that oil is leaking from this tiny hole, running down the front fin and dripping onto my transom saver. This problem doesn't help a guy sell his boat if ya know what I am saying. I went into the local marina and they couldn't find a cause by looking at the exploded view. They want me to bring it in. You all know what this means, MONEY. I don't want to dump a bunch of money into the thing. If I can figure out what the problem is I can fix it myself. I am lucky enough to be mechanically inclinded.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just need to be pointed in the right direction. Thank you all.

THat is just a drain hole for the lower unit/mid-section so water doesn't stay in and freeze in the winter. That is perfectly normal for unburnt 2-stroke fuel to be coming out of that hole and there is no need to take it to the dealer. I'll bet you ran it on muffs, right? Whenever people do that (rarely) they don't expect it and get all upset. It's no problem. In the lake, it doesn't seem to do it, but run it in a barrel for a while and quite a bit of crud that will float to the top of the barrel. That's one reason I try to use synthetic oil in mine. It's supposedly biodegradable and DOES cut down on the crud. Good luck on the sale, the crud wouldn't bother me at all.

I ran it on muffs last fall, but have not since it has been in the water this season. It looked like lower unit oil mixed with water. Ya know what the stuff looks like when you winterize (the used, old oil). That is what this looked like. The buyer is concerned about it and I kinda am too. It isn't fuel or anything like that. This stuff is thicker.

Still no problem? Am I getting concerned over something I shouldn't. I appreciate the timely response. If the stuff leaked out enough to see I will snap a photo of it and post it up. Thanks again, truly appreciating the help.

I agree with LBJ. Pull your lower drain screw to make you and him feel better. If that is not "milk", then you know it's 2-stroke residual. You would be amazed how long they can ooze after running.
