I have a 2004 Evinrude 150 direct injection on my 18 foot Shallow Sport bay boat. 233 hours on the motor.

I had experienced occassional loss of power over the last 3-4 months, but would only lose power for a second or two. I thought it may have been a fuel quality issue at the time. This past weekend, while idling at the dock, the motor was running for a few minutes and then began to sound like it was starved for fuel, and then died. Motor cranks and tries to fire, but will not run. Fuel bulb is firm.

I have an external fuel / water separator, and checked that filter. It was under pressure and was full of fuel. I then removed the cowling and checked the on-board fuel filter. It also was under pressure and was full of clean fuel.

When starter fluid is sprayed into the air intakes, the motor will fire and run, but then dies once the fluid is burned off. The electric pump (at the rear of the motor) runs when the key is turned on. But it still seems like fuel is not getting to the injectors... Could this possibly be the vapor separator?

Do you have any suggestions?

The same thing was happening with my engine. Tilt the engine up and check the lower unit to see if there is any gasoline pooling. This happened with me and i noticed a gas leak in between my top carb and the air silencer.

DI's don't have carbs. Gas has to get to the VST and thru it. Then to the injectors.

This turned out to be a problem with the Fuel Lift Pump. The lift pump has been replaced, and she's back to running like a champ.
