Here in the sunny South my mate and I's tolerance for the 90 to 100 degree weather is diminishing. We are looking for type two vests that allow some air to cool our aged bodies. We can't seem to find any in the catalogs that aren't the bulbous bib style or buckled pieces of foam that wrap around tight and cut off all air circulation.

Auto inflators and May Wests don't appear to be an alternative because of the risk of hot ash burning a hole in them as we empty the ashpan in our steam launch (dang woodburner!). One vest for all of our boats seems like the way to go.

Any one have knowledge of a cool wearing vest that would like to share?

Re: Hot weather life vests

Check out some of the LL Bean ones. I used to have one that I used in the heat of the Texas sun. It was made for a kayak and think it may have even been a type III, not II. But, I am sure they have them in II that offer more open area. In the small lakes we operated in, they were great and then we used type II for any water sports and busy days. I found the ones with large arm openings were the best fit for comfort.

Inflatables are the only way to go no matter what the temperature.
