lower unit installation

I just replaced the lower unit on my 1985 merc 115 hp in line 6. I started it up with muffs on it and the water pump is pumping good but it feel like I have foward or reverse. The prop is turning, but when it is in neutral the prop will only turn foward. Shouldn't it turn freely in both directions?

I have not replaced my unit yet, but, from what I have read your linkage is misaligned with the gear box.

drop the lower unit, move the shifter and reinstall. Before following what this novice says finda manual with the correct procedure for this so you only have to do it once.

In nuetral with the motor off, the prop should turn freely in both directions. In forward the prop should turn CW with a ratcheting sound. In reverse, eh prop should turn less than one turn in either direction, before stopping.
