Re: steering cable questions
Okay, I read through the FAQ on
how to wind steering cables on the drum, but am a bit confused (that happens alot...
). Can anyone help a bit more with this? FWIW, the boat is a 73 MFG Gypsy 14 with a 50 hp rude.
The trick is, feed your cable through the drum from the inside, one end up thru one hole, & the other end up thru the other hole, take out all the slack, and make sure the both ends are even. Then, holding the steering wheel steady, wrap the upper cable, 3, or 4 times around the upper part of the hub, in a clockwise direction, as you are facing it from below, leaving it hang over the
top of the hub,
Then do the same with the lower cable wrapping in a counterclockwise direction, on the lower part of the hub, leaving it hang over the
top of the hub,
This should leave both cables wrapped around the hub, at the
top one to the left, and one to your right, if facing it from below,,, now just thread your cables thru your pulley's, on each side of the boat, taking up slack at the motor pulley's, and then clamping them down.
Actually, it doesn't matter which cable is on the top, or bottom spool of the drum, as long as one is wrapped clockwise, and the other is wrapped counterclockwise, as long as both end up coming off the
top of the drum, before being threaded onto the rest of the boat pulley's.
