got some trouble

Hey Everyone. I got some questions about our boatengine. We have a small boat with a 1996 Johnson 9.9 15HP 2-stroke Engine on it. My husband was driving it on a river and it went out sounding like it didn't get anymore gas. We had it for just a few month and were driving it regularly and it worked fine. It was also run twice a month or so from the person that had it before. They never had any trouble with it.
Now we cleaned the carburator and changed the sparkplugs but it won't fire back up. A friend took it to someone and they said it blew the piston rings and it doesn't have enough compression. He said fixable. I went to another dealership (they don't have johnson) and they said it might be too much money than what it's worth with having piston and -rings changed, cylinder bored out, etc. and they said the waterpump might have went out on it and it overheated (there was a cable melted to the engine when we took the cover off). I didn't find a waterpump to order for that engine though??? Maybe I have looked for the wrong name/part.

Now I know this is a lot to ask for but can anyone help me on at least the area if it'll be worth fixing. We want to sell the boat (including engines and Trailer) and I wanna see what we got to do to make it worth some.

It probably is not worth repairing, considering parts and labor costs. Or at least would be very expensive. I suppose they gave you a guestimate?

it will cost more to repair, than you will get for it repaired. i would take the lower unit, carbs, and any other good parts an put on ebay. or donate it to a local schools mechanics course.

they haven't given me an estimate yet. I will go back there this week and they said they'll do a quick check to see if it's even worth starting on. I figured that after all what they said it wouldn't be too good of a shape. oh well...thanks though!

Before you throw in the towel ask the mechanic for the compression reading from each cylinder and post it back here. Yes it may need service but it may be worth saving. Anybody handy in the house?

also, 1996 Johnson 9.9 15HP 2-stroke Engine is it a 9.9 or a 15, to different motors.

Well, I just got went by a mechanic yesterday and he said there is no compression. He also said that it must have gotten extremely hot because the paint on the cylinderhead is actually flaking off.
I"ll remember that there are 2 differnet engine types. The one we have is a Johnson 9.9 2-stroke with model number J10REDD. So what ever how many HP it had sometime when it was working!
I actualy didn't have too much hope before for the engine (since it melted cables on to the engine) so the word from the mechanic was no surprise. He said we would be easily spending close to $1600-1800 on it fixing it (boring out the cylinders, new pistons, etc. with them having an hour rate of $100) and the engine is not worth that much.
Any good guess what to do?
