Default is it possible to jump start a mercury outboard without a key?

Hello Everyone,
I was hoping someone may be able to help figure this out. I had my boat stolen last week and they took the boat for joy ride using up gas and hitting every rock in the lake, then brought my boat back..how could they do this without a key? its an old 115 merc. Thanks

If it's ADI ign they just unpluged the kill wire and jumped the starter.

If it has a distributor then you need to jumper the switchbox. Still simple...

one more thought, I temporarily lost the key to my merc 650 and found 3 different keys on my keychain that all would turn the ign.

Put in a battery shutoff. That'd be too complicated for them.

Run another kill wire and put a fuse in the line. When you want to run , take the fuse out. No thief will remove a fuse if machine won't start. Works on Quads & snow sleds also.
