Hi I'm new to this boating lark but was wondering if anyone could help. I'm trying to get the family into a boat and our maiden voyage was a bit of a disaster.

Just picked up a Johnson 4 model no 4BR7E, ran it in a water butt and seemed ok but plenty of smoke coming from no particular part of the engine. Took it out and it died after 5 mins. Measured the 50:1 recommended oil/petrol and replaced fuel. Got it running, again with some smoke but running more evenly. I'm worried about the water pump, should I see an outlet spurting water....at the moment I can't. I'm trying to be careful not to ruin the cylinders. I would be very greatful for any advice.

Many thanks

Andrew

1972, you do not have a tale tell stream. there is and outlet on the back of the motor leg, that you should get mist or droplets. i personally would put a new impeller in it just to be safe. oem manuals are available here in the marine store.

Wouldn't a '72 model be 4BR72. That E should be a number that indicates which of the 1970s it is ?
