Minn Kota only goes in reverse

My Minn kota all terrain 40 only goes in reverse. I hooked the wires directly to the battery and they almost soldered themselves to the battery. I tested the voltages at the output of the speed switch and got 9.8V when in reverse speed 1 and 0V on all forward speeds. I suspect the speed switch is bad but could there be another reason this is happening? Why would the wires have melted to the battery terminals? Thanks

did you just touch them to the batt? if you've got a loose connection there it can cause a lot of heat to build up real fast.

I have a battery with nuts on the post and I locked the wire in with the nuts. I only ran the motor for a few seconds in reverse and maybe 10 seconds in forward (which didn't spin the motor). I'm thinking there is a short when put in forward and thats what melted the wires.
