Correct Motor Covers - '74 850

I've recently picked up a '78 Merc 850 and am questioning whether or not the motor cover "band" is correct for my motor.

At the back, it says "800" is mostly black with thin red pinstripes and slanted Mercury letters; the top cowling says 850; the lower unit says 85 HP with blue stripes (blue is mostly wore off); the front cover is chrome and seems to match the band; finally, the serial numbers match that for the 74 850 - which the previous owner says it is.

Shouldn't the band say "850" if it was correct? Also should a 74 have blue stripes or the red/black stripes like it is?

I'm not too concerned about it, but wouldn't mind knowing for future reference.

Thanks,

Lower skirt and top lid are correct for the year. Main cowl wrap and face plate are from earlier years ~ 1970 or so.

I'll see if I can dig up a pic of a '78 850 for ya.

Is that face plate have a molded plastic center?
I need one like that for my 1966 1100SS.
I have a later model face plate with decal and a blue stripe.

Here's a poor quality pic of the 1978 advert...

And a pic of a '78 50hp for comparison... would be similar for the 85hp.

Your Merc 1100SS is a taller inline 6 cyl motor, and would have a slightly different faceplate.

Really,, they all look the same.
Still need an original.
You don't happen to have one do you?

Looks like I had a type in my own message. The opening statement should have said a 1974 850 - not a '78. Does that make any difference?

thanks,

Makes a difference only because that cowling is different in 1974...

here's a pic:
