Replacing Steeing Cable

I am attempting to replace my steering cable as it became unraveled. I had no problem taking it off the outboard (Johnson 175).

My question is how do I get the cable out of the steering gear box. Do I have to take the entire steering wheel out of the boat along with the box in order to get the cable out?

Oh and by the way, my power trim stopped working when my steering cable broke. Is the power trim problem related to the broke cable?

Thanks

Re: Replacing Steeing Cable

If it is a rotary cable there is a lock where the cable goes into the steering box, kind of like a washer with a spring on it ,the cable has a detent in it, the spring pushes the washer off center to lock the cable in, you need to push it up and pull the cable out a bit then just turn the wheel and it will come out.

The trim problem is not related, they are two completely different systems, you may have knocked wire lose when you were pulling the cable.

rotary there is a hole in the connector, you have to have a stiff pin, like a nail, to push into the hole to release the cable, then turn the wheel as the cable comes out,
