Hi
I have been given an old Johnson Seagull outboard. I want to find out the year of manufacture and the HP. I think it might be a 2hp. The details that I can find on the casing are SJP 1117A4?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks:confused:

Re: Help with Seagull

SJP makes it a Forty plus (Alleged to be 2-3HP) from between 1956 and 1967

A4, I think, makes it January 1964. The number is a production number.

It has a Villiers carb and a Villiers coil and points ignition system if I have got it right. (See the info on the website about removing the flywheel before you are tempted to try using a puller.)

It should be run on 10:1 gas:eek:il mixture. (I think that one is too old to convert to 25:1)
The gearbox oil should be sae 140, which is difficult to find now but it is still available for agricultural machinery

The website "http://www.saving-old-seagulls.co.uk/" is a mine of useful info and a source of spares both new and second hand.

The discussion forum "http://www.saving-old-seagulls.co.uk/FORUM/index.php" is a valuable source of help and advice. There are people from North America, the UK and Australia on there who are absolute fanatics and what they don't know about Seagulls is not worth knowing. They will welcome you into the fold if you post on there and will confirm the ID.
