Lately when we run it it spits and sputters and dies. But if we take the cover off it runs perfectly. What's wrong here?? We've run out of ideas. He's already put quite a bit of money into fixing the mounts and he'd rather not have to send it back in to fix this problem as well. Anyone have any ideas??

you have a exhaust leak from the leg, up into the cowl. the motor does not like to breath polluted, low oxygen air.

Are you running it in a barrel? Motors don't like to run in barrels with their hood on. They breathe all the smoke coming up out of the barrel.

No out on a lake, never tried it in the barrel with this problem.

My '60 40 HP had the same problem. Don't know about yours, but mine has an intake hole in the case below the carb. It had a "filter" of sorts over it that became a door over the years and completely blocked it off. Next easiest way for air to came in was around the exhaust tube, bringing exhaust w/ it.

OK, in that case you have an exhaust leak or the cover is shorting out the plug wires somehow. Can't tell you where to look, the problem is wherever you find it.

when you put the cove on make sure it isnt touching a spark plug wire it could have a lose connection thanks, nick

Could it possible be the powerhead to adapter gasket? I am having the same problem and I am waiting for mine to be delivered.
