Question mercury 500 gear sync?!

hi all,
i'm having problems with my motor, i recently dropped the lower unit to change the impeller, once done i had problems re-installing the unit i cant seem to get the gear sync right, i can find forward and neutral but cant seem to get reverse, i have looked at the gear rod that comes down from the head and i think the lower end could be damaged but not sure! can i get a new one or does anyone have ant ideas about the gear sync?

thanks dan
p.s. its mercury 500 50 hp s/n 9007024

Default Re: mercury 500 gear sync?!

I am going through the same exact thing as you are. (cam-shift model)
I put the lower unit and top end in in neutral and re-installed, forward works, neutral works but it doesn't seem to engage into reverse. I haven't tried it in the water yet though - maybe the shaft needs to be spinning in order for it to engage in neutral?
Hope someone else could give some advice?

Unhappy Re: mercury 500 gear sync?!

I'm from little Belgium i try to explain a bit how i did it:

I put my gear in to neutral (handgear) position

than you must put the lower unit also in neutral
When you do this you feel a klik...
than you can turn the propeller left en right free.
then you have the neutral.
for a test turn the lowerunit gear to left and if you then
turn the propeller you hear one side its klikking and on the other side you also move the axe for the motor.
if you turn the gear (after putting it back to neutral ) to right you have the reverse gear. if you thurn the left or right ,it have to turn the axe of the motor. Verry important : you can't see it goos reverse if you turn on the axe to the motor...
so to istall it put the gear of the lower unit in neurtal ( propeller is free left and right)
also put the gear handle into neutral. install you lowerunit and be carefull for the gearaxe. make sure its in the right position.
if all goos right it shut work
soory for the bad explanation ...
