Merc 850 drive shaft removal

Hi Guys, I am attempting to remove everything from my 1976 850's lower unit , Everything was going OK until I got to the drive shaft I took the nut off the pinion and the snap ring off below the water pump housing but the shaft will not move, also can not get the shift shaft bushing?? out. Please help :(

What I will do sometimes is clamp the shaft in my bench vise (brass jaws) horizontally, using a block of wood and a mallet and tap the case away from the vise/shaft. I do this with the case resting on my bench so as not to let it hit the floor.

Thanks rock. Do you know if that shift shaft bushing comes out turning counter clockwise threaded ?

Yes, the shift shaft bushing's threads are right-handed.

You can make your own removal tool by grinding 'tangs' in an appropriately-sized socket to match the slots in the bushing. Note that commercially-made bushing removal tools are available if you have no luck with the home-made variety.
