Yamaha FT50 CET overheating - thermostat?

I' look after a RIB for our class association, which has a FT50.

This started overheating last time we took it out - the alarm sounded, and the block was verrry hot when I took the cover off.

When the engine is warmed up (and the alarm sounding) the water telltale is stone cold, which implies to me (and the engineer to whom I spoke) that the thermostat may have failed or be sticking, and so not sending water into the engine.

Two questions:
1. Can I achieve a short term solution by removing the thermostat?
2. If so, where is it located? I do not have a service manual.

Thanks,

James

Re: Yamaha FT50 CET overheating - thermostat?

find a different engineer.
that motor also uses a pressure control valve that can stick open and dump water pressure and allow the top of the motor to run hot.
the t-stat and pressure control valve are both routine maint items.
memory says the T-stat is located on the upper port side, usually you have to remove the electronics panel cover and the pressure control valve is on the exhaust cover.
if you run it without the t-stat your next post will be about "making" oil.
myself, its time to tune up the cooling system, water pump kit,t-stat and pressure control valve grommet replacement.

Hi rodbolt,
Thanks for the advice - that's why I wanted to check before doing anything.

Time to get the engine to an engineer for a proper look!
