Can anyone help, I had water in the gear oil so I have removed the water pump housing including impeller etc. However the drive shaft seals didn't come off when I removed the lower water pump housing and now remain on the shaft. The manual says they should have been stuck to the lower housing with loctite 271.

What's the best way to remove them without damaging the shaft etc?

Thanks

Are you on about a Merc 200 20hp. Ive just read the manual (Seloc volume 1) page 9-26. If your on about the drive shaft oil seals they should of come off with the water pump base. Coulnt of been glued into the base when inserted. Looking at my old water pump base the oil seals are rubber on the inside and should come off easly.

Re: Mercury 200 outboard drive shaft seal problem

The drive shaft seals in the lower water pump housing should stay stuck in the lower water pump housing when removed. Sounds like they are stuck on the drive shaft. If the drive shaft is carbon steel, likely corrosion stuck them on. I would pry them out or take the case apart and unbolt the pinion gear and then totally remove the drive shaft. If they have corroded onto the drive shaft, then new seals are not going to work very well. In that case you can use a speedi seal (sp?) or I have had good luck with a through cleaning, jb weld as a filler, and then polish back to original od.

Good luck!
