Hi I have a 1971 Johnson 50hp and it will not start. I got it to start one time and it ran just fine, I have not been able to get it started again.

It is getting spark and I have new plugs in there

It is getting gas

I have compression

New starter

It just keeps cranking strong, just will not fire up.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank You

What is your history with this ouboard? Is it new to you, or is it one you've had a long time. What work has been done to it recently, if any? Are you using fresh fuel mix? How long did it sit without running? All of those things can influence what might be going on with it.

When you start a thread here, the more information you can supply from the get-go, the faster people will be able to figure out what's going on and offer suggestions.

Go to the Engine FAQs, OBJones. Look for "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find.

It is new to me. The only new work that has been done since I got it to start the one time and then not again is that I changed the starter. the new one seems to been working properly. i am using the same fuel mix that I used 3 weeks ago when I first got it to start. I do not know how long it sat before I bought it, but when I got it to start i let it run for about one hour 3 weeks ago with the ears on. Took it to lake and could not get it to start. then I changed the starter last week and have tried several times to start it without any luck.

Thank You

When you say "It is getting spark" - does that mean you tested for spark on both holes using a 7/16" gap?

Do the choke plates close off completely?

When you prime the fuel line, does the bulb get firm and stay firm?

When you lift the hi-idle lever to the "start" position, does the timer base advance fully?

Is the battery fully charged?

If the answer to all these questions is "yes", put some premixed fuel in a spray bottle, spray it down the carb throat and try again. Let us know what happens.

Curious, what symptoms led to replacing the starter?
