1992 evinrude 60

I recently purchased a 1992 60hp evinrude. The motor runs great. I noticed it did not have the air intake/filter? box on the carbs. Should I purchase this or is it ok to run without?

I have an 87 60hp and took mine off to work on carbs. Haven't noticed any difference though I'd recommend placing back on just because when those carbs are sucking gas any debris could also get sucked in and into the crankshaft etc.
