Leaked out gear oil over the winter

Today I took the boat out of storage and gave it the once over and noticed the gear oil resivior was empty. Never had any trouble with it before today. The boat has been in storage since last Oct and here in New England it was a long cold winter. Is it possible that it seeped out through the o-ring washer on the lower screw due to extreme tempatures.I did notice the ground beneath the drive was oil colored and stained. Any thoughts or things I need to check. Thanks:confused::confused:

Did it have a new gasket and the screw tight when winterized. If not, yea, it would leak.

Look at the bright side, you noticed it before putting the boat in the water and you know for sure there was not water in the unit to freeze.

But, do as others have suggested to fix it.

ok, After looking at more closely today I see gear oil drops leaking out from under the anode up in back in the open area near the bellows. Did I discribe that right? So it's starting high and running down to the fill hole.
What do you think? Shift shaft seal or what could it be? Thanks:confused:

What are you working on?

PS: Searay doesn't make engines or drives, look at the sticky at the top of this forum.

Sorry the drive is a Mercruiser Alpha Gen2.
I live just north of Boston and play on Winnipesaukee.
