I have kept it outside for about four years and have never had a problem with it until my last trip. While on auto pilot it would start changing directions uncontrolable and its now only running at half speed. It can also do this when the batteries are low but it also did it with another battery I had in the boat. Is this fixable or am I going to have to replace the whole unit? Also the button cover has worn away and I put home made button system in it but I don't think thats whats causing the problem.

I just had mine apart the compass read 02 model year and it seems everyone with that compass board has had problems. Google search minnkota autopilot recalibration. I did this to mine but didnt fix the problem. I ordered a new board from minnkota after much biatching and swearing $130. They had problems with the design some have had there replaced under warranty except me. This is my second autopilot with problems it starts spinning out of control for no good reason. I checked batteries in transmiters,probed around with volt meter. I hope this is my problem or im calling minnkota and biatching them out every day until its fixed. Mines rp55 ripetide edition copilot,autopilot 12volt. My part will be here 5 days and will update how it works. I sugest you do the google thing and take the head part off its just philips number 2 theres four simple screws to take out. Then get your volt meter sharp prob ends and push in white,red,green,brown,black wires until there all off, the rest just pulls off. Now you have the compass out mine looks like its low on fluid and could be the stupid reason im having problems. i think Minnkota should have stood by its motors but they didnt for me and ive called them few times over this problem.
