Question Looking at Minn Kota RT160 Em trolling motors for out board.

I have a 1986 Winner 1850 with a 225 2 cyl. Evinrude.. It likes its fuel. My boat is a v haul. Anyhow these trolling motors are 24volt with 160 lbs of thrust. Information states these are for boats 18-24 foot. It sure looks like a gas saver instead of having to start the engine from place to place. I fish both in the Gulf and the bays. And move from spot to spot. Does anyone know about these or have an opinion?

When you say "move from spot to spot", just how far are you moving. If you are talking a couple hundred feet or 50 - 100 yards or so that's one thing. If you are talking greater distances, start the big motor. 160 pound electric motors draw a bunch of current and unless you have realllllllly big batteries, you won't move very far, very often before you have dead batteries. If you expect to save gas using this rig, figure the cost of the motor, two large batteries, a large two bank on-board charger and you will quickly figure out that you can buy a lot of gas for what that setup costs. This is a trolling motor, not a prime mover. You use the gas engine to get where you want to fish. Then use the troller to troll. A cheaper alternative and far less weight involved would be to add a small four stroke kicker.

Sir, Trolling is what I was refering to do. I have a 2 stroke 225 evinrude and it guzzles gas and oil while trolling. I figure it's smooth and don't have to start the big motor when you want to move around. My boat is a center console and I was going to install two batterys under the helm. In the long run in time, I figured this would save money. Also I was thinking of installing two solar panels for the trickle charge. Along with a onboard battery charger. Any event I'll be able to get back to the dock with my outboard. I wanted an opinion on if this actually has the power to push the boat around. And also if you ever knew of anyone who installed these outboard mount trolling motors... Thank You. Please let me know

A friend of mine uses one on his 18-19 ft bass boat and trolls for crappie with it. He really likes it and says he can troll most of the day with it. Keep in mind tho, his trolling speeds vary anywhere from .5 to 1.5 mph. So that will prolong daily battery life by not running it wide open. I don't know what he is using for batteries but I'm sure they are big. (amp hours)

Thanks for the reply. I figure that they will work fine then. I'll be installing them shortly and I'll submit a post afterwards. Thank you.
