Re: rookie question, running in driveway

If the motor is running in a barrel, the water should cover the water pump at all times while running, and before starting the engine.

[Edit] On most motors, covering the water inlets is not sufficient because the pumps are not self priming.

Could do more than fry water pump could fry whole engine. It would be best to get a flusher & hook it up to a water hose. It should come with instructions on how & where to locate. If not you will see what looks like vents on either side of the lower unit just above the gear housing. This is where the water intake is. If you are stating it in a tanik of some sort make sure the water is above these "vents" As I said before the best way is to get a flusher. Using a small tank you will have alot of turbulence in the water. Also the water will get hot quick because you are using the same water over & over uless you keep rinnung fresh water into the tank. Just buy a flusher for less than $10
