Trim raising itself

Hi, I hope this is not a duplicate post but I got tired of looking after an hour.

I have a 1997 200 XL Merc, that the other day while underway the trim went up by itself. I could not lower it by the switch on the throttle. I had to use the one on the motor.

I resumed boating and checked the up and down on the throttle and it worked fine. A little later same thing while underway the motor came out of the water, again I had to use the switch on the motor.

Does any one have any ides where the problem may lie?

Thanks for your help,
Brian

Sounds like the switch in the throttle may be the problem. Disconnect it back at the motor. Then trim the motor with the switch on the motor and see if it still comes up with the throttle switch disconnected.
If it does, reconnect the throttle wiring, and disconnect the motor switch.
Could also be a relay going bad. Switch relays and see if the problem causes it to go down instead of up.

Thanks for the reply Don. I will try what you said but since it is intermittent I may have to try it in the driveway several times and hope the motor raises itself.
