I was having problems engaging reverse gear on my 2002 Mariner 60hp 4x bigfoot at the weekend. It is going into forward , but with a little more of a clunk than usual, the control lever cannot even be moved with force into the reverse position, any ideas what the problem might be, and if the solution is practical to undertake myself?

I have just had a chance to inspect the engine again on the trailer. The lever can be moved from neutral to reverse and forward positions, however when the lever is in reverse the prop doesn't spin at all, even with some force. Should i be worried that this is a gearbox problem and not a cable adjustment issue?
