Re: has anybody drilled out?

If you're referring to the exhaust relief holes on the back of most motor legs, then no, no improvement will be noted. Those only spit out exhaust at idle when the gearfoot is submerged and backpressure prevents exhaust from going out the prop. Once underway, the exhaust will exit underwater out the propeller and very little, if any will come out the reliefs...

Jims, They do "Dry Stack" Mercs for performance gains. You can check it out at the "Scream and Fly" forums. You obviously need to drill the midsection and exhaust housing.

Make any modifications to the exhaust very carefully. Two stroke engines depend on a certain amount of back pressure for efficient scavenging. "Opening up" the exhaust can result in decreased efficiency and loss of power.
