Question 1983 Bayliner Capri Steering removal

I purchased a new steering wheel for my 83 Bayliner Capri. I removed the nut from the old wheel and the steering wheel won't budge. I have no clue what to remove next. Is there a set screw or some thing I've missed?? Please help!!

I'm not particularly familiar with that wheel arrangement but in all likelihood it needs a (steering) wheel puller to pull it off the inner shaft spline. I've never seen someone able to pull them off by hand. There are probably a couple of extra threaded holes in the inner area that the puller's bolts would thread into. Check it out and let us know.

After a long time of looking at the steering wheel.. I ended up bending the hell out of the stock steering wheel so that I could fit a steering puller around the old unit. It worked like a charm. Just years of that old stock wheel and calcium from water build up really had it stuck on there. Anyways long story short new wheel is on and its ready for the lake!

A common method is to have one person hold the wheel and pull out, while another person strikes the steering shaft (with the nut unscewed until flush with end of shaft) with a hammer. The shock breaks the wheel loose. I got the technique down so well I could pull back on the wheel with my knees and one hand while I struck the shaft with my other hand.

It helps to put some grease on the steering shaft when re-assembling to assist with disassembly in the future. And don't overtighten the nut because the tapered shaft has a tendency to split the hub of the wheel if its cast aluminum. This happened to me with a stock Teleflex wheel.
