Johnson Question

I was on the river this weekend with my 1984 Johnson 35hp to see if I adjusted the linkage correctly. It shifted in forward and reverse just fine. I tried to bring my boat up on to plane and it sounded like I hit a log. The engine reved high and I noticed that the shift lever was back in neutral. I popped it back into gear and tried to plane the boat out again and same thing. There is no grinding or chattering. It slips smoothly back into neutral before it revs out. Could it be a spun prop, bad linkage adjustment, or clutch dog and gears. Any tips.

Re: Johnson Question

Sounds like you need to adjust it some more, you have it to where it will just hook forward but isn't fully engaged,
Move the cable forward some more and you should have it.
A spun prop would just slip, it wouldn't kick it out of gear.

Re: Johnson Question

the clutch dog is jump out of gear, if not fixed it will only get worse, may be bad already. just use it for testing, until you've got it adjusted right.

Re: Johnson Question

here's a pic of the shift rod, if the screw does not go thru the indentation, it is not right.
