Question Mercury Sportjet 90 - Hard Starting

I just rebuilt my Sportjet 90. Its takes a bit to get it to start....... basically, one person turning the key and me flubbing with the throttle on the engine. It fires, then dies. Fires then dies........ fires then dies.......But, once it starts, it runs nice and strong.

Right now I have the oil injection connected........ as well as a 50:1 mix in the tank.

Would the access of oil be causing the rough starting? What else should I look at?

Thanks aton!

Phil

Possibly..but considering it was just rebuilt....did you (or your mechanic) do a proper link and synch on the carbs/timing? Sounds more likely...

No I have not. I followed the manual for adjusting the carbs....... I have the procedure for checking the timing at WOT (seems weird...... so I'm supposed to tie on to land and hten punch the gas wide open????)

Not many people if ANYONE around here even work on sportjets.......

What do you mean a link & synch?

The opening of the carbs has to be in synch with each other as well as in synch with the timing advance. It all has to work together in perfect mechanical harmony or it won't run right. All carbs have to open the same amount at the same time, while at the same time the linkage has to advance the timing the apropriate amount. The procedure is outlined in the service manual. Sportjets are the same as any other outboard till you get to the lower unit. your 90 is actually a 115 powerhead if I understand them correctly...

What parts did you use for the rebuild? Remember a 90 Merc Sportjet uses a Force powerhead with Mercury ignition........Mercury 90 hp outboard powerhead parts won't work.

Once its running it runs good. Its just a matter of starting it after its been sitting for a bit.......
