overheat alarm

replaced both thermostats on 1988 88 hp johnson spl
overheat alarm sounds after approx 8 minutes while running on water hose
with ear muffs.is this a accurate way to determine if engine is really overheating.
thanks for any replies.

Running it on the muffs will not indicate if the impeller is properly functioning. The hose will force feed the cooling system. That being said, you likely have a restriction in the cooling circuit, if in fact you are overheating. That is what you need to verify. Do you have access to an infrared thermometer? Can you hold your hand on the block for a 1, 2, 3 count? IF it is not overheating, you will need to test your heat switch if applicable.
