89 mercruiser 3.0 alpha 1 shuts off

please someone help me get my family in the water.i just bought a 17 wellcraft and it has the alpha 1 mercruser 3.0 it was running fine i guess but now when try to put it in gear it shuts off it has no problem when its out of gear starting up and when its idling out of gear but right before it goes into nuetal to go in gear it shuts down on me?pleasssse help

Time for a new lower shift cable. The one between the engine and the outdrive.
It's either worn, corroded, or both, and causes the shift interrupt system to stay engaged too long and kills the engine.
