prop won't engage

OK i have a 99 merc optimax 135 saltwater. I just got the boat and i started it up a couple days ago and i found that it will not engage in gear. I thought it might be in the cables be cause the steering cable is bad too but when i shift it into gear i can see the mechanism moving back and forth inside the cowling and even the rod that goes down to the lower unit moves. any ideas guys oh and when i shift int into gear the prop spins freely except for a very low click click when it goes in one direction

Have you had the lower unit off to service the water pump? Sounds like you have the shift shaft off a few splines.

nope thats what puzzles me, my uncle thought it might be some kind of bushing or something but i dont know what hes talking about, because the boat sat for about 2 years before i got it.

has anybody ever had this problem or know of a possible solution to this issue, its getting warm and i really wanna get out on the water!!!!!!!!!!! ha thanks
