I bought a used trolling motor for its gatormount. It is a foot controlled Motor Guide with 30#s thrust and a 40" shaft. Motor and controls work fine but the shaft is bent. How hard would it be to disassemble the trolling motor and heat up the shaft to straighten out? Is it possible? I was planning on using the mount on my current transom mount trolling motor but if I can repair this one I'll use this motor instead.

Re: Bent shaft

Just clamp it to your work bench and manhandle it. Heating is not a bad idea, but I doubt it's necessary - unless it's a real sharp bend. Not sure how much heat you can apply without taking the wiring out.

If you have to take it apart (for leverage or whatever), the plastic top should come off pretty easy - it's not sealed or anything. The lower unit is installed with red loctite (which I believe requires heat to release) and torqued to 30-40 ft lbs.
