I have a 1989 40 horse Johnson VRO. The hydraulic cylinder leaks around the end cap where the shaft comes through. My first thought is to replace all the o-rings. Is this what I should try first? Also, how does the end cap come off so that I can get to the guts? There are 4 threaded holes in the top of it, but they are pretty boogered up from the previous owner.

Thanks,

DennyC.

You could get a pin wrench from Harbour freight but the 7/32" pins are too small for OMC and slip out. I used a big Azz 16" pliers and some heat. Just make sure you don't "grab" too much. It will take a little effort to grab the small lip.

Thanks Littletunny,

Is that cap threaded, or is it a press fit?

A very fine thread. It takes a lot of turns to get it off.

The current Snap On catalog #900 has the tool you need. part #afs482b Page191 of the current catalog. Worked great for me. Adjustable faced spanner wrench. I think it was about 38 bucks. Well worth the money.
