I'm having problems with the idle on my 120 Hp Evinrude. It's got a "miss". I thought the missing was due to a fuel/air leak so I rebuilt all 4 caburetors. After rebuilding the carbs it still has the same miss. Out of the water, every time the motor spudders a larger than normal puff of smoke comes out of the prop's exhaust port. I'm not sure if it's a fuel issue or something else now??? I was wondering if the caburetor's floats are out of adjustment, if I have an air or fuel leak somewhere or if it's an electrical problem... It's warming up and it's getting to be skiing weather!! Any help anyone can give me is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!! Tommy
I've got a 120 Hp Evinrude 1986 model with a miss, at least I thinks it's a miss... The motor runs decent for about 30 seconds after cranking then goes to puffing. It's not a back-fire, but running it out of the water every few seconds it sounds like it miss fires and a larger puff of skoke exits the props exhaust port. I replaced the carb kits thinking it might have an air/fuel leak and it didn't change a bit. FYI: A while back I replaced the oil injection fuel pump with a basic vacuum pump, I was scared the pump might go out and leave me paddling. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Could be the fuel mixture is too rich to consistently ignite. Could be other things, timing issue, etc. Search the forum for link and sync. I believe the floats should be parallel to the bowl when the needle valve is closed.
Welcome to iboats. did you do all this, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013?
have you checked your compression and spark, spark should jump atleast 1/2 inch, compression over 100psi, and with in 10% of each other.

Re: Setting floats on a 120 Evinrude (1986)
Most likely sucking air somewhere. the first thing is to determine which cylinder / carb body. Take the airbox cover off and start it up. Place a toothpick in the idle jets one at a time until you figure out which one it is. The idle jet is the lower one of the two air bleeds.
