I have a 1977 Johnson 70 HP, 3 cyl. Carbs are in need of cleaning & I got 3 carb kits for it. How difficult is it to clean & rebuild & how long should it take. I am a novice at this kind of thing.

Re: Carb Cleaning - Rebuild

I always put down a clean towel to work on.
Since this is your first time do one at a time, one part at a time and don't hurry, there really isn't to much to them, I think it is harder to get them off than it is to clean them.

The key is clean clean clean, your hands, work area and tools.
Taking things apart is easy getting them back together is a little different so pay close attention to how everything is put together, especially your throttle linkage.
I have taken pictures of things before I start taking them apart so you have a reference.

When you take a screw or fastener out put it back in the hole if you can so you don't wind up with a pile of screws and don't know where they go.

3 carbs first time I would say no more than an hour and a half.
like I said there really isn't to much to them, take your time, one thing at a time, if you hit a snag come back and I'm sure someone will be glad to help you.
Good luck

I appreciate the help you guys give on this forum. I noted the sticky at the top but I was wondering where you could get the tools mentioned for the carbs & what kind of cleaner to soak the carbs in. Thanks.

NAPA has the carb cleaner, it is expensive but the best I have found and being cheap like I am i have tried them all, get the gallon size with the soaker basket.

you can make your own jet removal tool, instructions are floating around this site, Tashasdaddy has a good picture and dimensions of them.

I do not remove the jets, some people do some dont.

I use mechanics wire or welding wire to push through the jets to make sure thay arew clean and clear, that way I never have to worry about ruining one by removing it.

Make sure you remove all the nylon washers and rubber gaskets before soaking the carbs
