merch tach settings

i have a 1985 merc 150hp outboard what should the tach setting be it has a 1p,2p,3p,4p switch on the back of it,thanks

4p. Black to ground, gray to sender and purple to positive or batt. Set tack on 4 setting. If it still doesn't work replace rectifier.

i put the tach on 4 and the rpms are only showing about 450rpms out of the water the other settings on the tach show even lower.a freind of mine said i need a tach with a 6p position the sender wire is hooked to a yellow wire on the regulator.would a 6p tach be correct or is something else wrong?
