When working on a just purchased used boat with a merc 135 i was cleaning the back drain. And hydralic fluid came out, the drain is about 6inches down the motor mount. And there is no visible exit fow water to flow. When the battery was turned on the tilt trim worked as did the stering. The boat has not seen water in eight months. Does anyone know where this fluid is comming from?

What year is the Merc? What do you mean by "back drain"? if the fluid stinks it is gear oil, and you have a leak.

The oil is a dark amber color, i am not sure on the year probbally 1997. I do not think it is gear oil since it is on the motor mount. By drain i mean, in the back of the boat where there is room for the engine to trim up at the bottom there is a drain port.

OK, It sounds like you have a leak in the PTT unit. You should tilt the motor up and see where it is coming from. A typical PTT unit of that vintage will have two short trim rods and a single tilt rod. All or one could be leaking.

Normally you fill those units when tilted all the way up. Use a Dextron III Auto Transmision fluid in 'em. Fill until the fluid overflows the fill hole. The boat should be level when filling.
