Default Mercury 900 78' stator?

My switch box went down so I am testing the electrical system. The book says there should be a stator below the flywheel and 2 wires coming down. I also have an old 1250 for reference. On the 1250 I can see the stator just fine. On my 900 I cannot see a stator and there are no wires? This engine ran well for about 1 hour rides until the switch box went down. Could the stator be missing? Would the engine run without it? Confused. serial # 4849780

Default Re: Mercury 900 78' stator?

If the 900 is a distributor model it can indeed run without a stator, as long as the battery is fully charged up. CDI ign don't like low voltage so eventually the ign would fail. I suppose it's entirely possible that someone could have removed the stator but I sure have never seen an Inline Six without one! There's a first time for everything I guess!

Note that if the 900 were an ADI model it would be impossible for it to run without a stator but I assume you don't have that since you mentioned the switch "box" not "boxes".

tredding, You should be able to peek under the flywheel and see the stator. If not, you might like to remove the 8 5/16" fine thread bolts that are clustered arounf the flywheel nut. You should be able to see, remove and install the stator after eh outer flywheel is removed.
