I just purchased a small aluminum boat with a 6HP Evinrude. This thing had set for almost 5 years without being touched. When I got it home I flushed the fuel system, put in fresh fuel and it actually started on the 4th pull. I couldn't believe it.

Of course it needed some TLC. It wouldn't idle, spit and sputtered etc. etc. I rebuilt the carb, replaced all the hoses, bought a brand new fuel tank and it started on the first crank and purred like a kitten. When I got it out on the water, it would only run with the choke on. At high RPMS, I had to "feather" the choke to keep it going.

Yesterday, I rebuilt the fuel pump. It made a huge improvement, but it still cuts out when you open up the throttle.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I feel like I did the work on the carb and fuel pump correctly since it did make a big improvement.

It could just be pulling air into the fuel system somewhere between tank and pump. If pumping the bulb keeps it going that's the cause or still pumping poorly but more likely you still have not got the carb properly clean. Running ok with a bit of choke points to that.

no air leak between carb and engine?

if it cuts out completely then look for ignition problems but not if it'll run with some choke

I've checked all the fuel lines and there is no way they could be sucking any air. It has to be in the carb or pump. Maybe i didn't clean it good enough.

One thing hit me while I was scrathing my head trying to figure it out. The fuel pump kit that i bought did not have the little plastic seats for the valves in the pump housing. i guess i'll try to find those and see what happens. that's the only part that has not been replaced in the fuel system.

Ah - Did you replace the water pump? It may not be reaching high rpms due to overheating especially if it sat for 5 yrs.
