Hello! I have an old Sears 14 hp outboard Serial # 67601410-1362, Model #57460850, 4600-5400rpm. I would like to find out what year it is and if there are any possibilities of parts availability. Also, if anyone knows what (if any) quirks this model may have been prone to have. Thanks!

Your Sears outboard was made by McCulloch, but I cannot find that exact model number. Can you check again? In any case, all the 14hp ones were made in the 1960s, so yours is of that vintage.

Parts are not easily come by for that outboard, although you can probably find ignition parts and impellers. One helpful site for parts is:

http://www.laingsoutboards.com

I've never had one or run one, so that's about all I can tell you.

Thanks so much for the valuable info! I checked again and this is the model number on the motor. I have done several unsuccessful searches myself, finding this site along the way. I'll try the site you suggested, too.

I don't have that number.McCulloch prefix is 574.Early McCulloch 12 and 14 hp start with 5746012 in 61 and increase by one each year ie: 62 is 6013.no McCulloch in 65,
jumps to 6069 in 66,5956 in 67 5976 in 68/69,6061 in 70.I'm pretty sure they were gone by about 73.It's interesting that the same manual that lists a 70 14hp McCulloch built Sears only covers McCulloch to 67.No mention of McCulloch In my 69 aftermarket service manual.Parts may be hard to find.If laings can't help try the Scott Guy at ask the scott guy or The Antique Outboard Motor Club at www.aomci.org.A friend bought a used one and had it about 20 years it sat a lot but never failed him.and went pretty good.
The McCulloch 12 & 14 are only about 16 cu in, 14.1 hp at 5,000 rpm, the omc 12 and 15 are about 18 and 20 cubes and develope at 4,000 and 4,500.
The McCulloch technology is closer to present 2 strokes technology.Could be lighter than the OMCs of that era. In 61/62 they had a 3 cylinder 63 cube 75 hp.

The 14hp McCulloch motors worked pretty well and my opinion is they actually ran smoother than OMC (vibration-wise). However, we all see who won the race.

Interestingly enough, some of the Sears aluminum boats of that era showed a maximum horsepower of 14 hp on their tags. The same boat from the actual manufacturer said 15 hp. Just a little marketing lesson, I guess.
